Pentecost

From Our Pastor

The Jews of Old Testament times had a number of religious feasts throughout the year.  Ea

ch year on the Feast of Weeks, they offered to God the first-fruits of the corn harvest (see Leviticus 23:9-21).  This Feast of Weeks fell 50 days after the Passover Feast, and the name "Pentecost" is the Greek word meaning "fiftieth day."  In later Jewish times, it also celebrated the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai .

On this fiftieth day, then, we see reported in the Acts of the Apostles how the Holy Spirit came upon them in dramatic fashion, fulfilling the promise Jesus had made to the apostles.  Pentecost has been called "the birthday of the Church."  Each of us should spend some time in prayer this week asking the Holy Spirit to fill us with what we need, with what God wants to give us.  The Holy Spirit is the life of the Church and the life of our souls.

I'll be heading down to see my good mother on Sunday evening.  I suppose it would be nice of me to cook dinner for her, but my father prefers her pasta to mine.  May God reward all you mothers on this Mothers Day for the sacrifices you have made to bring life into the world and give your love generously to your children.  And have a great week.

   Family Life Corner

We asked Treasured Words to order a variety of Fr. Benedict Groeschel's books for those of us who are going to see him in August.  I have picked up a couple new ones to add to my collection.  I will take one or two along to have him autograph.  Of course you don't have go on the trip to buy a book. Check them out soon to get the best choice.  He is a great writer. You can catch him on EWTN on Sunday night at 7PM.

We promised more ideas for introducing your children to Our Blessed Mother.  Include her in some way in a remembrance on Mother's Day as Jesus gave her to all of us, to be our Mother, too.  You might see what shrines may be close and make a family outing and explain the particular devotion.  The one to Our Lady of Guadalupe near LaCrosse is a beautiful one and the Votive Chapel contains windows depicting a number of the devotions to her.  Remember that as you draw closer to Mary, she draws you closer to her Son, Jesus.

Congratulations to all of the children who received their First Holy Communion.

A Mothers’ Day Prayer

Thank You, Holy Father, for Your special gift of mothers; for the example of Your unconditional love they share with their children.  Thank You for the mother who lets her child know without doubt he or she is loved, and for the child who returns that love.  Lord, today we pray You will protect and guide mothers everywhere; that You will grant them Your wisdom in loving and teaching their children.  Today, may children everywhere remember the warm caresses and whispers in the night; the tears dried and Band-Aids, the peach cobbler, the laughter; and the blood curdling scream, "No!" at the brink of danger.

Thank You for the mothers who played with us, taught us, nurtured us, fed us, listened to us and tried to understand us.  Today, may we remember Mom's beauty when we were young; and her loveliness discovered as we aged.  Lord, today draw specially close the mothers who are alone, for whatever reason; and grant them Your comfort, Your pleasure, Your peace.  And, Lord, for children who are alone, because of distance, death, or indifference, may good memories flood their minds.  And if there is not a good memory, may forgiveness burst forth from their hearts and revive in them long lost joy. Thank you particularly for phone calls today, and for a shared "I Love You."  Today as we honor, celebrate, or simply reflect on the woman who gave us birth, or who adopted us into her heart. We thank You, Lord, for life, and for our mother!

                                                                                                                                                        In Jesus name,  Amen.
